What's an "RFC"?

The Internet Request For Comments (or RFC) documents are the written definitions of the protocols and policies of the Internet. These are what define the Internet Protocol, TCP, UDP, how mail moves, and numerous other standards that make everything work.

(However, it should be noted that a couple of these were actually written as humorous spoofs of other RFCs. RFCs 1149 and 2549 document aspects of the Avian Transport Protocol, and should be required reading for anyone with a really geeky sense of humor.)

RFCs available from eHugin

Let's face it: places like IANA and Faqs.org have some heavy-duty computer resources, but they also get a lot of traffic from (quite literally) all around the world. By contrast, eHugin might not exactly be a supercomputer, but it's (hopefully :-) fast enough to toss around a few simple documents for folks here in AT&T-land. The links below are for documents stored directly on eHugin, so viewing and downloading them should go pretty quickly is you're inside the AT&T Broadband network.

The one that most people will probably be interested in is RFC 1700 (Assigned Numbers). This is the list of services which have formally registered TCP or UDP ports with IANA.

Other RFCs

You can find other RFCs (there's a lot more than what I've mirrored here) over on FAQS.org.

Comments, suggestions, etc can be sent to webmaster-at-ehugin-dot-com.
